Sleep Study

Accurate overnight monitoring for the diagnosis of common sleep disorders.

What is a sleep study?

A sleep study is a simple overnight test that records how your body functions while you sleep. It monitors your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, brain activity, body movements and snoring to help identify sleep disorders.

Most sleep studies can be completed in the comfort of your own home.

Why have a sleep study?

Many people have sleep disorders without realising it. A sleep study can help diagnose conditions that affect your sleep, health and daily life, so you can receive the right treatment.

Who may need a sleep study?

A home sleep study can help diagnose:

  • Snoring
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Central sleep apnoea
  • Periodic leg movement disorder
  • Insomnia

It can also provide helpful information when assessing conditions such as delayed sleep phase syndrome and narcolepsy.

Home Sleep Study vs Hospital Laboratory Sleep Study

Sleep studies can be performed either in a sleep laboratory or in the comfort of your own home. While laboratory sleep studies are recommended for some complex sleep conditions, most people being assessed for snoring or sleep apnoea can have a home sleep study.

A home sleep study is a convenient, comfortable and effective way to monitor your sleep using a small portable device. It provides your doctor with valuable information to help diagnose common sleep disorders, without the need to stay overnight in a hospital or sleep clinic.

What happens during the test?

You will wear a small monitoring device overnight with several comfortable sensors placed on your skin. The device records your breathing, oxygen levels, heart activity, brain activity and body movements while you sleep.

The following morning, simply return the device to the Sleep Centre for analysis.

Getting your results

Your sleep study results will be sent to your referring doctor. Please book a follow-up appointment with your doctor approximately few weeks after your sleep study to discuss your results and any recommended treatment.
